You’ve seen mice or rats in a cage, running on a wheel and probably thought they’re only doing it because there’s nothing else to do in there, that there’s no way they would do that in the wild. It seems cruel, right? Well think again.
A pair of researchers in the Netherlands, Johanna Meijer and Yuri Robbers, set up a wheel outside with some food around it to attract animals and found that over 200,000 animals ran inside the wheel over a three year period. Animals ranging from mice, rats, frogs shrews and even slugs ran inside the wheel.
The two researchers reported their findings in their paper Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences. Maybe this will once and for all end the debate that making mice run in wheels is cruel. They like it! Okay?
