Whatever happened to the spirit of competition?
North Hill Elementary School, located in Michigan, sent a flyer home asking parents to tell their children not to be too competitive during the field day. The flyer specifically stated that the school was asking the children not to be too competitive because “we believe that all of our children are winners.”
What a load of crap.
We need to stop teaching our children that they are winners, even if they suck. Yes, it is important for your child to not feel like a reject because he isn’t an athlete, or he isn’t the best at something, but it’s also important for people to learn that in life, they will fail.
What’s telling these children that they are winners, even if they finish last, going to do to them in the long run? Is friendly competitive spirit dwindling?
Bennett Staph posted the photo of the flyer to Facebook to show her friends how silly the whole thing was. Some parents were even proud to say that even their children, grades 1-5, were saying the letter was ridiculous.
