So much for tradition.
An entire class of Chicago seniors that were excited to receive their diplomas were denied, because they threw their graduation caps into the air. You know, they wanted to do what pretty much every graduating class since the beginning of time has done.
The school defends their decision by stating that the students were specifically told not to throw their caps in the air. Superintendent Dr Robert Lup explained that “The gym is decorated; people dress up (some of them); we expect dignified behaviour…Secondly, it is an indoor event. In past ceremonies, people have been hit by flying caps. We’d just as soon not have graduates leaving with cuts and black eyes.”
Ridgewood High School has said that if students want their diplomas, they will have to publicly apologize for their behaviour.
Students, and parents are outraged, saying that “I just think it’s really ridiculous,” and “It was kind of silly that they would request them not to…It wasn’t a way to disrespect anyone, it was just a way to do something together and celebrate the end of the year.”
