Nobody is safe from the long arm of the law – not even Jesus.
PHILADELPHIA – Philly Jesus, a Philadelphia man famous for dressing up like the holy man himself, was arrested for trying to solicit tips while ice skating, according to police.
The man, Michael Grant, 28, was ice skating last Friday in his full Jesus costume at Love Park, and was posing for pictures with a variety of people who wanted to take a photo with their lord and savior. That being said, Grant claims that the police accused him of asking for tips, rather than having them just handed to him.
Grant was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and failure to disperse.
Hours after his arrest, Grant tweeted that he told people who asked for pictures that he doesn’t charge for posing, but “tips are welcome.”
Grant was released on Friday evening, and he plans to fight the charges in court. His lawyer, Charles Gibbs, told the Philadelphia Inquirer that Grant was “simply exercising his First Amendment right of speech.”
Philly Jesus, according to Grant, was created after his religious beliefs him overcome his substance abuse issues. I can’t think of a better way to pay homage to your religion than to profit from it.
